Mabel Chan

Mabel ChanMabel Chan (Lovett '10) will be serving in the healthcare industry in Cuzco, Peru, focusing on children's health and women's reproductive health. She will be serving with Proworld and will be working in local Ministry of Health Clinics alongside Peruvian health professionals to implement health campaigns and educational workshops. These workshops will be conducted in schools, orphanages, social agencies and local communities in Cusco, where Mabel will be able to promote and reinforce key health topics. Also, she will work in mobile health clinics and turn in test results to Proworld in order for them to distribute the necessary medication.

Lila Kerr

Lila KerrLila Kerr (Sid Rich '12) will be serving with Projects Abroad in Liberia, Costa Rica during the summer of 2009.  She will work in a government preschool program for disadvantaged children who are undernourished or whose parents are working during the day.  The program aims to teach (colors, shapes, numbers, the alphabet), foster interpersonal skills, and provide a hot meal in addition to serving as free childcare.  Lila is excited to help care for the kids and prepare activities and lesson plans to teach English.


Janice Loh

Janice LohJanice Loh (Baker '11) will be working at Gongnonglu Primary School in Xian, China, with Cross-Cultural Solutions. In a school with only 2 English teachers, she will be assisting the teachers before and during class. She will also teach the children using books, songs, and games.

Jing Luo

Jing LuoJing Luo (Sid '11) will be traveling to Xi'an, China with Cross Cultural Solutions. She will be teaching English to tour guides at the local history museum as well as taking care of orphans with special needs at Starfish, a local orphanage. Jing hopes to learn more about the culture of her native country while addressing the issue of children with special needs this summer.

Courtney Ng

Courtney NgCourtney Ng (Hanszen '11) will be part of a community archaeology program with Projects Abroad in Huyro, Peru. She will be assisting a local archaeologist with clearing and cleaning Incan ruins, as well as investigating the area for new ruins. When she is not working directly on the ruins, she will be designing and updating educational materials to share information about the ruins with the native people who live in and around Huyro. She will also be assisting with odd jobs such as maintenance of the town schoolhouse, playing games with the local children, and learning as much Quechua as possible.

Harrison Nguyen

Harrison NguyenHarrison Nguyen (Hanszen '12) will be volunteering in Hoi An, Vietnam where he will be working with a organization called Global Village Foundation.  His project focuses primarily on helping underprivileged children through teaching English and general mentorship.  He will be working at a local elementary school in the mornings and then spending the afternoons at an orphanage occupied predominantly by mentally and physically disabled children who have been rendered so, for the most part, because of the after-effects of the Vietnam War.   Harrison will be assisted by GlobeAware in organizing and developing his service project.

Casey O'Grady

Casey O'GradyCasey O'Grady (Hanszen '11) will be serving with Projects Abroad in Cochabamba, Bolivia. He will be working with students in the lingustics department at the Universidad Mayor de San Simon. His service will assist non-native speakers as they develop their abilities to read, write, and speak English. While often difficult to obtain, a working knowledge of the English language is extremely valuable to Bolivian students as they seek employment in Bolivia and abroad.

Rachael Petersen

Rachael PetersenRachael Petersen (Will Rice '12) will be working with women's empowerment issues this summer.  She will be serving with ProPeru in Urabamba, Perú for six weeks. During her service, Rachael will be providing emotional, moral, and legal and assistance to rural women at the K'anchay Wasi center, as well as helping teach English at an after-school program for young children.

Emily Romano

Emily RomanoEmily Romano (Jones '11) will be teaching English in the Sacred Valley region of Peru. She will be serving with Projects Abroad in the community of Calca. She will work in a secondary school of 430 students, ages 11 to 18. Most of her time in the school will be put toward English instruction, though she also hopes to involve herself in the extracurricular activities of the school.

Dennis Shung

Dennis ShungDennis Shung (Sid Richardson '10) will be serving with ProWorld in Cusco, Perú, as an intern in their Perú Project NGO Health Internship with a Clinical Focus.  He will be rotating through different departments volunteering in local health clinics, teaching health education classes to the community, and working with health clinics and community organizations to implement public health campaigns focusing on reproductive and children's health.  He will be responsible for a personal project, concentrating either on a specific health education topic or researching a public health issue facing the community.

Rathi Subramanian

Rathi SubramanianRathi Subramanian (Brown '11) will be working at an orphanage this summer 2009. She will be serving with Greenforce in Delhi, India. She will be there to take care of and to teach young children at the orphanage.

Samon Tavakoli

Sam TavakoliSamon Tavakoli (Will Rice '10) will be working in the health-care sector at both the urban and rural level with a focus on community medicine.  He will be serving with Child Family Health International (CFHI) in Ecuador.  The first week of service will involve shadowing in tertiary-care hospitals in Quito accompanied by language classes.  For the remaining five weeks, the project will focus on community medicine in the Amazon Basin region.

Alex Tran

Alex TranAlex Tran (Will Rice '10) will be working with Child Family Health International (CFHI). She will be a part of the Public Health and Community Medicine program offered in New Dehli, India. Her experience will involve talks and special instructions from medical professionals and public health specialists, as well as, learn medical techniques used in rural clinics. Her service will involve directly serving the medical needs of patients at rural clinics and low-income city facilities. This is  Alex's first trip to India, and she is thrilled about the entire experience!

Rodolfo Velasquez Lim

Rodolfo Velasquez LimRodolfo Velasquez Lim (Jones '11) will be working with Orphanage Outreach in the Dominican Republic. For two months, he will be at an orphanage called El Hogar Esperanza de un Nino, located in a small town called Monte Cristi. There, he will be helping take care of the orphans, assisting with chores, and teaching English at local public schools.

Susan Wu

Susan WuSusan Wu (Jones '10) will be serving in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia through Projects Abroad. She will be working at the surgery department of the Second State Hospital under the supervision of Dr. Onon. In addition to observing laproscopic procedures, assisting with basic open surgeries, and exploring the city, Susan will be teaching the nurses conversational English.
