  • Community Involvement Center Jobs
The Student Assistant position is federal work-study job that is filled on an occasional basis. A Student Assistant in the Community Involvement Center plays an important role in the daily functioning of the office. Excellent customer service skills, an ability to work on tasks autonomously, and a commitment to promote the value of community service are the crucial elements of the position. Students serve as assistants to members of the Rice community in search of community service projects, guide students through searches on the volunteer database, perform other office duties, and help administer Community Involvement Center events (including the Volunteer Opportunities Fair, the Alternative Spring Break program, and the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt). The Community Involvement Center is a fun place to work and is centrally-located in the Rice Memorial Center.

Year of Service programs allow students to volunteer in the community for extended periods of time, typically one year, but the term of service can be as short as ten months and as long as two years.  Many people are aware of some organizations, such as AmeriCorps, Teach for America, Peace Corps, and Jesuit Volunteer Corps, but there are many more that are not as well known, such as Dominican Volunteers, IndiCorps, and Mercy Corps.  Opportunities exist throughout the United State and abroad, and each program offers its own unique focus on service, whether it be through the issue address, a faith-based approach, or a specific population served.
