Annual Events

  • Orientation Week (O-Week) Outreach Day
First year and transfer students are invited to participate in this annual introduction to service, which is held on the last day of Orientation Week each year.  Students can choose from activities at approximately 30 non-profit agencies in the Houston community that offer a wide variety of service experiences, whether working on projects related to children, the environment, people with disabilities, refugees, affordable housing, or other area.

  • Volunteer Opportunities Fair (Fall Semester)
This fair, held at the beginning of each academic year, focuses on volunteer opportunities available at local non-profit organizations.  Students are able to speak one-on-one with agency staff about specific positions, required time commitment, distance from campus, accessibility of public transportation to the site, and any necessary training for volunteers.

  • Good Works Internship and Career Fair (Spring Semester)
This fair focuses on the internship, career, and year of service opportunities offered by community agencies.  In order to facilitate the recruitment of students early in the spring semester, this event has been set to coincide with the time line for Houston's ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs and Shell Non-Profit Internship Programs.  While some agencies may be recruiting for summer volunteers, all participating agencies at this event will have employment or internship opportunities.

  • Volunteer Leadership Retreat
    To be added.
Sponsored by the Rice Service Council, this overnight and full-day retreat takes place over Labor Day weekend each fall semester and brings together leaders from a variety of student organizations engaged in service activities throughout the year. It is a forum for planning, collaboration, and leadership training and helps organizations lay a secure foundation for programming and student organization leadership.
