International Service Project to Guatemala

International PhotoEvery summer, the Community Involvement Center organizes an international service experience for a team of students. The team averages 13-15 in size and the trip is for approximately two weeks. Having an international service trip during the summer allows for more travel time than during University breaks which allows the group more community interaction and more exploration of the country and culture. The group is selected early in the Spring semester and spends the remainder of the semester fundraising, learning about the country and the service organization, and getting to know one another. Upon returning from the trip, students share their experience and new found knowledge with the campus and local community. Destinations for International Service Projects have included Port-au-Prince Haiti, working with a variety of homes affiliated with Mother Teresa (an orphanage, home for the dying, and a home for disabled children), Quintana Roo in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, working on environmental preservation and education, and San Lucas Toliman, Gautemala, working with the local parish on reforestation and construction projects.
