International Service Project 2010
Student Coordinator Information & Application

International Service Project:
The Community Involvement Center’s fourteenth annual International Service Project will take place in San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala approximately May 16 - 30, 2010. In Guatemala, the students along with one staff adviser from the Community Involvement Center will stay at a rural hotel that is rented by the parish in San Lucas and used as dormitories. The first two days of the trip will focus on traveling and orientating the students to Guatemala and the issues related to its poverty. This includes a tour of the many service sites and an introduction to the workings of the parish in the community.

Students will return to the service sites, including a reforestation project, a construction site for a clinic, and a stove-building project, on a daily basis. Throughout the trip, students rotate between the various sites and do projects such as sorting coffee beans, bagging dirt, mixing cement, gardening, sifting dirt and various other environmental/construction projects. All of the service sites are located in the small town of San Lucas Toliman and are within walking distance of the parish.

While in Guatemala the students will have a chance to participate in the following activities: a day at a market and drive through the mountains; a hike on the mountain side; a day out on a boat on Lake Attilan visiting various ports and small towns, including a visit to a memorial on the site of the assassination of a fellow priest during the civil war; an evening mass at the parish with a musical celebration, and several informative discussions with Father Greg, the founder of the mission. These talks will address such issues as the history of Guatemala, the recent civil war, the cause and effects of poverty and the on-going projects to give back land to the Mayans.
