Orientation Week (O-Week) Outreach Day
Since 1995, the Community Involvement Center has organized an Outreach Day on the last day during Orientation Week (O-Week) for first year and transfer students. Each year, approximately half of all incoming students participate in the day. In 2008, over 400 students signed up for one of 20 service projects. Over the years, volunteers have served in a wide variety of ways, including helping to sort clothes at the Houston Area Women's Center Second-to-None Retail Shop, cleaning up at the Bering Omega AIDS Hospice, working on a house with the Campus Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, painting at a homeless shelter, washing dogs at the Humane Society, taking a group of children to the Houston Zoo, and many more fun activities. Returning Rice University students are also involved, serving as Site Leaders for the various projects.
The 2009 O-Week Outreach Day will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2009 and first year and transfer students may sign up to participate starting the first week of August.
