Information for Finding a Rice Student Tutor

tutor_coverSchool or Community-Based Programs
Rice students serve as tutors in many capacities. Unfortunately, the volunteer tutoring programs that you can read about on the Community Involvement Center's web page (Wharton And Rice Mentoring, for example) are not set to be expanded or replicated. The student organizations we advise are driven by student interest, proximity to campus, available transportation, and demonstrated needs of the community. Those established community programs with organizational support (staff, resources, and a curriculum) may advertise to recruit individual volunteers using the means below, but the Community Involvement Center cannot establish or staff new group programs at this time.

Individual Children
Given the small size of Rice University, we do not have the capacity to manage referrals for individual children. Many of our students choose to get involved in school- or community-based youth programs, but do not have the experience or training to work independently in a one-on-one setting. Also, in many cases, there are existing community resources about which families are unaware. Please contact your child's school to inquire about tutoring or mentoring programs available in your community. In some circumstances, it may be appropriate to advertise on campus using the methods below, but the Community Involvement Center cannot guarantee that a match will be made.

For Paid Tutors/Mentors
If you are able to pay the tutor, there are three options available to you:

For Unpaid Tutors/Mentors
You may submit information for publication in our electronic newsletter GIVE-A-HOOT, which is sent to students approximately every two weeks. Submissions in this category may not always be published, depending on the volume of service activities and other campus programs being offered at the time. These requests should state a clear need that cannot be addressed through other community resources (i.e. school or community-based tutoring or mentoring programs). Please visit the GIVE-A-HOOT section of our web site for more information.
