Danielle Axelson, Wiess '12, Wiess College Representative
Rice Student Volunteer Program (RSVP)

She wants you to volunteer.  As a RSVP Wiess college representative and newly elected internal vice chair, Danielle knows first hand how quickly any student can get involved in service.  Can't make RSVP's Monday night meetings?  No problem - volunteering happens everyday of the week.

Danielle has found purpose in her extracurricular activities, but that doesn’t mean she thinks that she has it all figured out.  When asked what she plans to major in, this Rice Baylor student smiles: “Today I am biochem and cog sci.”  At the moment, she may want to become a pediatric neurologist, but no one is forcing her to decide her future right away.  In the meantime, Danielle enjoys actively volunteering in Houston much like she did during high school back home in Louisiana.  In fact, Danielle sometimes wishes she could spend even more time pursuing service activities.  “I’m spending so much time studying,” she admits earnestly, “not doing what I really want to do.”

In just one year, Danielle has worked on a variety of projects, especially within the health and the hunger and homelessness committees.  She has been a blood drive coordinator, organized social activities to promote volunteerism, and found innovative ways to do her part in encouraging attendance at weekly meetings and events.

With a dynamic mixture of frustration and determination, Danielle declares, “Houston has so many needs - it doesn’t seem like Rice is getting out there [enough].”  Yet her own initial assessment of campus involvement does not discourage her from continuing her work or prevent her from acknowledging the significant past, present, and future contributions Rice students have made to our local community through RSVP and other student groups.  Danielle just knows we could do more.
