Jess Coe, Sid Richardson '09, Tutor
America Reads Tutoring Program
Ask Jess how she spends her “favorite part of the week.” Each semester, she attempts to choose an academic schedule that will not conflict with her preferred Monday-Wednesday-Friday morning routine tutoring four year olds at the Nehemiah Center. Jess feels fortunate that she has been able to manage her course load at Rice and still work alongside the same Nehemiah pre-school teacher consistently for the last two years. While she initially feared that a full time teacher would find her intrusive - and acted too cautiously to overcompensate for this reservation - Jess has succeeded in becoming less timid in her classroom role and building a trusting partnership with the teacher she assists.
Jess cares about education – and the environment. And more importantly, she can incorporate the two. In the summer of 2008, Jess was instrumental in developing a recycling program for Houston’s Medical Center. Orin Moore, the After-School Coordinator at Nehemiah has contacted Jess about implementing a recycling program at the school as well.
Even though she does not have plans to pursue a formal teaching career, tutoring has shaped Jess’ future plans. After graduation, she would like to continue to meld her interest in children’s education with her passion for environmental sustainability. She cites The Edible Schoolyard (an educational urban gardening and cooking program for students at Martin Luther King Junior Middle School in Berkeley, California) as another inspiration. As an Environmental Policy and English double major, Jess knows that she can tie her interests together with a little bit of creativity and heart.
