Steps to Becoming an America Reads Tutor

  1. Confirm with Office of Financial Aid (713-348-4958) that you have received federal work-study funding in your financial aid package.
  2. Fill out an application, available on-line at the Community Involvement Center's web site, making sure to indicate with which site(s) you are interested in working. This application will be e-mailed to those sites that you select.
  3. Get the contact information for the site(s) you select, on-line or from the Community Involvement Center, and set up an interview with the America Reads contact. You are responsible for making contact with the agency and scheduling an interview.
  4. Once you have been notified that you have been hired by the site, come to the Community Involvement Center (located on the 2nd floor of the Rice Memorial Center, above the Grand Hall) and complete the necessary paperwork to be placed on Rice University payroll:

Students are not authorized to start work and no timesheets will be processed for students until all of these forms are completed.

  5. For Nehemiah and Star of Hope tutors: Take several America Reads timesheets (white), available on-line, and sign ten Rice timesheets (yellow), only available in the Community Involvement Center.
For Wharton tutors: Sign ten Rice timesheets (yellow), only available in the Community Involvement Center.
Also note that there is a copy of the payroll schedule - a list of which days your timesheets are due to the Community Involvement Center - on the back of the timesheets and on-line.
  6. Begin tutoring according to your agreement with the site, being sure to have a strong understanding of your supervisor's expectations.
  7. Schedule hours so that you meet your work study allowance, and bring in your timesheet every other week! It is your responsibility to schedule your hours and not over-spend your work-study award.
  8. If you will be delayed or absent from work, contact your site supervisor immediately.
  9. Attend any training sessions or organizational meetings for the America Reads Tutoring Program, of which you will be notified via e-mail.
