Alfredo Gutierrez, Wiess '09, 2008-09 Loewenstern Fellow
Loewenstern Fellowship
As a junior majoring in psychology, Alfredo applied for a Loewenstern Fellowship to finance a summer service trip to Ecuador with the third party provider Child Family Health International. For a month, he worked alongside doctors and learned how the Amazon Indigenous people incorporate modern medicine with their own traditional medicines. He enjoyed being able to interact with, as well as learn from, the indigenous communities, and to practice his medical Spanish – a skill he hopes to use to better serve minority communities in the United States. As a premed student, Alfredo knows that this invaluable experience allowed him to expand his knowledge of other cultures and make him a more informed doctor in the years to come.
